CDC workers learn when they'll return to office after deadly shooting outside building

(TEGNA) Employees at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention campus in Atlanta have reportedly been told to make a full return to headquarters on Sept. 15, a little more than a month after a gunman fired hundreds of rounds at CDC buildings along Clifton Road in DeKalb County.

The date was reported in multiple national outlets Saturday, including CNBC and CNN.

CNBC cited an email sent Thursday by the CDC's new chief operating officer, Lynda Chapman, which reportedly said: "Your safety remains our top priority. We are taking necessary steps to restore our workplace and will return to regular on-site operations no later than Monday, September 15."

A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees the CDC, told CNN that some staffers have workspaces that remain impacted by the shooting. They will be assigned alternate spaces.

A DeKalb County officer, David Rose, was killed confronting the gunman on Aug. 8. The shooter, Patrick Joseph White, died of a self-inflicted shot.
