US Automakers Just Told Canada To Scrap Its China Deal — Canada Has To Choose
He has worked the same assembly line in Windsor Ontario for nineteen years. He builds engines for Ford F-series trucks. He did not choose the trade war. He did not choose the China deal. And this week — the organisation representing his employer walked into a House of Commons committee and said scrap it.
Brian Kingston — president of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers Association representing Ford General Motors and Stellantis — testified before the Standing Committee on International Trade on June 9th 2026. His message — diversification beyond the US automobile market is not an option for Canada.
Canada struck a deal with China in January 2026. Forty-nine thousand Chinese EVs annually at six point one percent tariff — down from one hundred percent. In exchange China agreed to lower canola tariffs from eighty-four percent to approximately fifteen percent by March 1st — unlocking nearly three billion dollars in export orders for Canadian farmers.
But Kingston warned the parliamentary committee — Chinese original equipment manufacturers could earn up to nine hundred and eighty million dollars per year in compliance credits under Canada's EV mandate. While GM Ingersoll sits idle. While Stellantis Brampton sits idle. While more than one third of Unifor's Detroit Three membership is on layoff.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford called the vehicles spy vehicles. Pierre Poilievre called them roving surveillance systems. Flavio Volpe of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association said fifty thousand cars is about a shift at an auto plant — a shift is one thousand workers.
