then calling police himself to report the crimes.

He mailed at least 18 taunting letters to newspapers and detectives,
including coded ciphers daring investigators to crack them.
He sent pieces of his victims' clothing as proof of his kills.
He threatened to bomb bridges and shoot children off school buses.

His final confirmed letter arrived in 1974.
In it, he claimed 37 murders.
One cipher went uncracked until 2020 — 51 years later.
The message? *"I hope you are having lots of fun trying to catch me."*

His identity has never been confirmed.
The case is still officially open.
