10 Easy Tips to Litter Train Your Guinea Pig

Litter training guinea pigs is often more of a combination of training and management (ie. strategically placing litter boxes in the right spots.) Guinea pigs aren't perfect in their litter habits, so you won't get 100% of everything in their litter areas, but you can catch the majority of it and keep their cage much cleaner by using some of these tips.

10 Guinea Pig Litter Training Tips:

Tip #1: Use a litter box that is big enough for your guinea pig to get in and turn around comfortably (ie. a rabbit litter box or cat box with the side cut out for easy access.)

Tip #2: Use a different material for the litter box and the rest of the floor so the guinea pig can easily tell the difference between the two.

Tip #3: Place the litter box in a safe, enclosed space. You can also drape a blanket or towel over it for privacy.

Tip #4: Teach the guinea pig to jump into their litter box. Lure them into the box with a treat and feed their favorite veggies while they're sitting in the box. Try to make the litter box a positive and rewarding place for them to be.

Tip #5: Place a handful of hay in the box, or put a hay rack nearby so they can eat hay while sitting in their litter area.

Tip #6: Try to put any stray droppings in the litter box so that the box is the only place with soiled bedding.

Tip #7: Put the litter areas in the spots where your guinea pig spends the most time (most likely eating or sleeping/hiding areas.)

Tip #8: Try to reward with a treat if you happen to catch the guinea pig going into the litter box on their own.

Tip #9: Keep the litter box clean so the guinea pig has no reason to avoid it.

Tip #10: Consider replacing your guinea pig's hiding places with several "litter box tents" instead (ie. litter boxes with towels or blankets draped over them for privacy - from tip #3) If you do this, be sure to keep the boxes really clean and have enough hiding places for the number of pigs in the cage.

Be patient and consistent, and the results will come!
