Where did you go to college or university? Why did you choose it?

If you made your decision based on reputation, think of how long it took for that university to become what it is today. There are plenty of historical ones that have been in operation for centuries. America has only existed for a few centuries, and so has its university. Harvard was founded in the 1600s. That history may be part of why it’s such a revered institution today.

The list of historic universities in Italy goes on and on. The oldest is the University of Bologna, the place where the term university came into fashion. The country also has several college towns. Students of the Unversity of Sienna make up half of its population. The rest of Europe also has famous universities. France has famous institutions in Toulouse and Paris. They were both temporarily shut down but are now back and better than ever.

The United Kingdom has the twin giants of Oxford and Cambridge. The two are occasionally referred to together and are revered and respected all over the world. They’ve also developed a reputation for snobbery, and the term was invented there. Salamanca’s university is where Christopher Columbus got permission for his fateful trip. Portugal’s university in Coimbra is a beautiful World Heritage Site.

The oldest universities in the world began as madrasas. They taught Islamic religion and grammar. Many of them, including Al-Azhar in Egypt, have since expanded their offerings. Historical universities have educated the greatest minds in the world. They’ve withstood centuries of wars and attacks to keep teaching students today. Their cultural significance makes them a valuable addition to any travel itinerary.
