The Rose of Columbine | Rachel Scott’s Faith: A Columbine Story of Courage

Rachel Scott was a teenager who attended Columbine Highschool:

The Columbine High School tragedy occurred on April 20, 1999, in Littleton, Colorado, when two senior students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, carried out a planned attack on their school. The shooting resulted in the deaths of 13 victims (12 students and one teacher) and injured over 20 others before the perpetrators took their own lives. The attack shocked the nation and led to discussions about school safety and bullying.

Rachel Scott's Story
One of the first victims of the massacre was Rachel Joy Scott, a 17-year-old student known for her deep Christian faith, kindness, and aspirations to become an actress or writer. Rachel was having lunch outside with her friend Richard Castaldo when the shooters approached and opened fire.

Rachel was shot multiple times, initially surviving the first few shots.

One of the gunmen, believed to be Harris, reportedly taunted her about her faith before shooting her fatally in the head.

Her friend Richard was shot multiple times but survived.

Rachel’s faith and writings became a symbol of hope and inspiration in the aftermath of the tragedy. Her legacy led to the creation of “Rachel’s Challenge,” a school-based program encouraging acts of kindness and compassion.

Heroic Actions of the Teachers
Several teachers and staff members demonstrated extraordinary courage during the massacre, most notably William "Dave" Sanders.

Dave Sanders - The Heroic Teacher
Dave Sanders was a 47-year-old business and computer teacher and coach at Columbine. He is credited with saving hundreds of students by ushering them to safety at the cost of his own life.

Evacuating Students: When the gunfire began, Sanders immediately rushed through the halls, warning students and directing them into classrooms or out of the building.

Blocking the Library Entrance: He and other staff tried to prevent students from going into the library, where the worst of the massacre occurred.

Shot While Protecting Others: While trying to help more students escape, he encountered the shooters on a stairwell and was shot multiple times in the torso and back.

His Last Moments: He managed to crawl into a science classroom, where students, including aspiring medical professionals, tried to keep him alive for nearly three hours.

The point is that death has been conquered. This message does not go into great detail. It is directed at those with little understanding of the Christian Faith.

Borean Study Bible.
1 Corinthians 15
Where, O Death, Is Your Victory?

50 Now I declare to you, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.

51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed

52 in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

53 For the perishable must be clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.

54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable and the mortal with immortality,g then the saying that is written will come to pass: "Death has been swallowed up in victory."

55 "Where, O Death, is your victory? Where, O Death, is your sting?"
