This box is the lowest power, smallest server class that Supermicro makes. The ATOM CPU does not need a fan. The system only has a small fan in the 200W power supply so it runs super quiet. It is perfect for DIY applications as it still gives you a modular design. You get 2 hard drive bays with PCIe slots standard 125V PC power connectors, dual ethernet and video. Our customer base use it for firewalls, routing two subnets through Vyatta VyOS, PIXIE boot servers or just a general lightweight linux box. Any application you want that is memory small, always on and without much noise.
CPU
The Intel D525 1.8Ghz Atom CPU is a little under powered at 2 core 4 threads. It still does support 64 bit mode with hyper threading and has L2 Cache. If you just run one OS and not VMs then it still makes a decent command line Linux or BSD box.
Hacking
The 200W Atom is also a perfect hacking box. In the drive bays you can put in SSD drives, SATA 8 TB drives, or even development boards. you just adapt a 12v power cord and tuck inside a Raspberry pi, ARM development board, or any of the android development boards. If you want to run your own IOT linux gateway apps this is a perfect always on box. Lastly you get a serial port so you can still talk COM1 9600 to whatever you break.
Better as a server than a NUC
Yes this is a few generations back but a NUC is really not a server. Just the device structure wireless Ethernet and connectivity through USB makes everything transient. When you debug you want to know that your eth0 has link.
