Snowshoeing Basics: Choosing Appropriate Footwear for Snowshoeing
As with any outdoor adventure, gear selection is often a highly personal matter. Choosing footwear for use when snowshoeing is no different. That said, I have found that certain types of footwear are more appropriate and functional than others when it comes to snowshoeing. In this video, I discuss the benefits and drawbacks of four different types of footwear that I’ve used over the years. They include:
• Hiking shoes
• Large snow boots
• Snowboarding boots
• Active snow hiking boots
There are obviously countless types of outdoor-specific footwear available. So, it would be impossible for me to cover them all in a ten minute video. But through my comparison and contrast of the above types of footwear, you should be able to make a reasonable choice when it comes to selecting the most appropriate type of footwear (for you) when snowshoeing.

My intentions behind producing this Snowshoeing Basics series of videos and articles is to share with you snowshoeing techniques, as well as to take you on some virtual snowshoe tours. Most importantly, however, is that I hope to inspire you to embrace the cold and snow and venture outside during the winter!

I've produced this collection of articles and videos about backcountry travel and exploration with the beginner and intermediate adventurer in mind. This is the demographic for whom I most often served while working in the Lake Tahoe outdoor recreation industry. In essence, these informational projects I create and publish are extensions of the many conversations we've had over the years.
Although I encourage you to venture out of your comfort zone, you need to know your limits and when to turn back. Tahoe Trail Guide and its contributors are not liable for property loss or damage, personal injury, or death. Always consult multiple sources when venturing into the backcountry. Always be prepared for the worst case scenario. Your safety is your responsibility.
