The Roman Notebook That Could Be Erased Forever

Before paper notebooks, the Romans carried reusable books made from wood and wax. Soldiers tracked supplies, merchants recorded payments, and writers scratched messages into soft wax using a metal stylus. Then, with the flat end of the stylus, everything could be erased and written again.

Some of these tablets survived buried in mud for nearly 2,000 years — preserving ordinary Roman conversations beneath the scratches of daily life. Ancient technology was far smarter than most people realize.
