Jacinda Ardern and Lorde met for the first time at the 2017 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards, with both appearing as starstruck as each other.

The Prime Minister read out the nominees for Peoples Choice Award before announcing Lorde the winner.

But the Kiwi pop sensation used her acceptance speech to throw the limelight back on the newly elected leader of Aotearoa.

"Guys, I'm sorry - we need to give another round of applause to Jacinda Ardern," the singer said after the pair exchanged a hug.

"I am so happy to have such an articulate, exciting, young, beautiful leader in our country.

"I can't believe you're at the New Zealand Music Awards this is like a big deal for music."

Ms Ardern replied that presenting to the singer was a "big deal", calling herself a "mutual fangirl".

Lorde picked up six awards, including Album of the Year for Melodrama.
