This video and worksheet explain what a topic sentence is and what it does in a paragraph. It also provides example paragraphs and practice choosing the best topic sentence for each one. It uses simple language and was created by a public school teacher for ESOL students studying mainstream English curriculum.

The PowerPoint includes the full script in the notes section so that teachers who haven’t used the PowerPoint don’t need to memorize the order of slides. (They can just refer to the PowerPoint notes in presenter view as they teach.) Like the video, this PowerPoint includes these important details:
-The topic sentence tells the main idea of the paragraph.
-The topic sentence has a topic and main point.
-The topic is whom or what the paragraph is about, and the main point is what your paragraph says about the topic.

An example is shown. Then, three new paragraphs are presented. Learners choose the topic sentence supported by the detail sentences and conclusion sentence shown.
