How can my PhD make a difference? | Boston University URBAN Program

The Boston University URBAN Program prepares PhD students to help cities tackle environmental challenges including climate change, air and water pollution, and extreme weather events. In BU URBAN, PhD students can make an immediate difference, by applying interdisciplinary methods to internships with governments, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector. In this video, hear from URBAN Program Director Pamela Templer about our innovative and solutions-oriented approach to graduate education that combines training in biogeoscience, environmental health, science communication, and urban governance. You’ll also hear from URBAN Trainee Jessica Wright and Cambridge City Councillor Quinton Zondervan, about Jessica’s URBAN internship researching the climate, health, and economic implications of a ban on natural gas in new construction buildings. URBAN trainees work on a range of topics, including tree equity, coastal resilience, and climate justice. As a National Science Foundation Research Traineeship Program, the Boston University URBAN Program emphasizes preparing students for diverse career paths and broadening participation for groups underrepresented in STEM. Join a community of peers motivated by social justice and striving to co-create environmental solutions that help vulnerable populations.
