I had ordered a couple #preamps on ebay and they appeared to go missing in shipping. After a couple months of waiting, I ordered another preamp on ebay... over a month later I figured I'd never see any of those items so i ordered bare parts to assemble my own preamp referencing numerous "how-to" sources online.
Then EVERYTHING arrived, all the missing preamps, and all the DIY parts at my door...but -
It was at this time I learned that I would need to pack my bags and find a new place to live.
The home I'd been renting went on the market and just 5 days after I moved out, it was sold at a nice profit.
A few months later I'm nearly settled in my new place of residence - fast forward to getting back to projects.

Prepping the preamps so I can test and learn. Using a flat "wafer" piezo transducer (pickup) for these tests, I quickly began to be underwhelmed by the piezo sound.
A piezo direct to the ouput jack was a harsh ice pick, not fun.
A piezo through the $7 ebay preamp was much better, but still lacked approval from my ears.
Then came 2 different $35 ebay preamp options. They both sounded much better, usable in fact.
Maybe one of the biggest issues with trying to test these, was how to simulate the actual mounting of the piezo pickup. I won't lie, I didn't come close to how the piezo would be mounted in an actual instrument.
I then had to figure out how to test a piezo saddle pickup. This is a thin ribbon that rests in teh bottom of the saddle slot, between the saddle and the bridge. It is sandwiched in there.
I pulls some spare parts from various boxes and wedged a make-shift bridge into my tele-mule pickup testing guitar. The volume was amazing, the sound was good considering everything was out of tune due to my testing approach...at least I verified the piezo and preamp worked - together.
Time to wire everything together.
I had read so much info on using piezo pickups in a guitar, opinions, suggestions, diagrams and rules are all over the place. But the prevailing wisdom was that a preamp was a necessity "period".
After all my wiring went into the project guitar, I fired it up and was less than impressed with what came out of the amp.
The saddle piezo was bright, and actually rather "acoustic" in sound. The magnetic pickup was squashed flat, no life left in it. OK, I had read about this being a potential problem, but why does it happen? I really don't know.
Back to the bench, took the preamp, out of the circuit, battery out... and the magnetic again sounded good! The next step in troubleshooting was to add the piezo back in, but without the preamp. The piezo was wired directly to the 3-way switch.
Again plugged into the amp and all sounds pretty good!

So, more study and research will be required to understand the ways of the preamp, but that will be saved for another day.

Time to give it a listen... Okay, I suck at playing guitar, but I do have fun with it anyway. I'll keep my day job.
