Combining Tablet Weaving with Loom Weaving

Portland Handweavers Guild hosted a 3-day workshop with Canadian Master Weaver Inge Dam “Tablet Band Incorporated into Fabric”. I had never tried this, and was excited to have this opportunity.

In this video, you will see the 8-pick sequence for weaving the workshop sample. I’m using 10/2 perle cotton and an 8-dent reed. The sett for the loom-woven sections is 24epi, and I threaded a straight twill on 4 shafts, alternating light and dark turquoise. For the tablet-woven section I have 30 tablets, with the threads from 3 tablets in each dent. Inge asked us to put the regular warp on the loom at home, leaving space for the tablet warp. Then we made our tablet warps in class, and tensioned them with bottles of water (or club soda!).

Inge provided several patterns determined by the threading, and I chose one that looks like white snowflakes on the dark background. To weave a snowflake, the turning sequence is 4B, 4F repeat. The treadling is simply 1,2,3,4 repeat. So combining them is very straightforward, as you will see.

I’m using a knife-edge rosewood shuttle (made by my husband, John Brockway) for beating the tablet warp. This helps me see the pattern better as I’m weaving, so I can be sure I’ve turned correctly and that all the threads are in the right place.
