How You Can Destroy Your Dog’s Recall
How You Can Destroy Your Recall
This video discusses things you may do due to how you feel when your dog does not return to you, or you get a delayed response to your recall training.
As you progress with your long line training with your dog you will eventually come to the point where you want to test it off lead, or free from the long line.
Here are some tips for you on how to test your recall, what to expect, and what you should not do:
• Choose your ground careful where you want to test your dog off lead. Always take a risk assessment and keep safety in mind.
• You are more than likely to get delayed responses simply because the dog is off the line and at a greater distance from you, expect and anticipate that in your dog training.
• Keep your emotions under control. Do not let irritation, exasperation, anger, or panic to enter into the situation.
• Do not get physical with your dog. No roughhousing, shaking be the collar or anything similar. That is the surest way to teach your dog to stay a safe distance from you.
• Foundation. Lay a good foundation in your dog training programme and do not leave your recall to chance. Gaining a steady reliability in your training will set you up for greater success.
• Work deliberately on keeping the dog within your close control and engage with the dog as often as possible. Do not leave the dog to do ‘it’s own thing.’
• Don’t cover great distances in your walking. Find 2-3 locations you can hang out it to begin with after you have familiarised the dog with the area and then work on having fun together and being together calmly.
• Scouting reports. Have your dog on the long line to begin with at least for the first couple of visits to a rich environment and habitat. This will build good self-awareness in you of what interests your dog and what challenge the area holds for you.
• Take every daily opportunity to train your dog in daily things as it will all contribute to the level of focus your dog has with you.
• Lastly, have fun and a lot of it. If you find it difficult to motivate your dog it will be certain to find interest elsewhere.
Have a great day folks!
