Cuttlefish are highly intelligent marine molluscs (related to octopuses and squids) famous for their incredible camouflage abilities, unique internal shell (cuttlebone), and complex behaviours.

Key Characteristics Appearance & Anatomy:
They have eight arms and two feeding tentacles with suckers, plus large, W-shaped pupils. They possess three hearts and blue, copper-rich blood.

The Cuttlebone: Instead of a backbone, they have an internal, porous shell called a cuttlebone. By adjusting the ratio of gas and fluid within this structure, they perfectly control their buoyancy. Masters of Disguise: They can change their skin colour, pattern, and even 3D texture in milliseconds to hide from predators or ambush prey. They do this using millions of specialized skin cells called chromatophores and reflective iridophores.

Defences: If threatened, they can rapidly change colour, use jet propulsion to swim away, and squirt a cloud of dark ink to confuse predators.

Intelligence & Diet
High Intelligence: Cuttlefish have the largest brain-to-body ratio of any invertebrate. They possess excellent memories, can learn by watching others, and have even been shown to delay gratification.

Diet: As carnivorous predators, they eat crabs, shrimp, snails, and small fish. They use their two feeding tentacles to rapidly shoot out and snatch prey. Where They Live Cuttlefish are found in oceans worldwide, living primarily in shallow coastal waters and coral reefs. In the UK (where common cuttlefish are typically found), they spend the winter in deeper offshore waters and migrate to shallower coasts to breed in the spring. Most cuttlefish have short lifespans, typically living between 1 to 2 years.
