Percussion of the Kidneys - Clinical Examination

The kidneys are a retro-peritoneal structure, protected by both ribs and musculature of the back. Percussion of the flanks in the lower rib cage can help discern pathological processes involving the kidneys, such as pyelonephritis or urolithiasis.
