How Kindle just got a bit worse

Let’s be honest: There’s a good reason Amazon dominates the ebook market: Kindles are simply great reading devices. You might not like how they lock you into the Kindle ecosystem, but there’s no denying they offer incredible convenience and great value for money. That’s just a fact.

But Amazon is quietly taking away a feature that’s been around for years. And if you care about actually owning the books you pay for, this is bad news.

On February 26, 2025, Amazon removed a key feature: You’re no longer able to download Kindle ebooks from their website.
