Canada Joins 40-Nation Effort as Geneva Talks Could Decide Hormuz Mission

Canadian Minister of National Defence David McGuinty said Canada is part of ongoing discussions on a multinational maritime effort linked to the Strait of Hormuz, as more than 40 countries coordinate their possible response.

Speaking at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, McGuinty said the final shape of the mission will depend on the partners currently negotiating the details and on what happens in Geneva on Friday.

Reuters has reported that around 40 countries have discussed joint action to reopen and secure passage through the Strait of Hormuz, with the United Kingdom and France leading efforts around a possible multinational mission.

The Strait remains central to global energy security. Reuters also reported that the International Energy Agency has called for Hormuz to reopen without conditions, while Germany has deployed naval vessels toward the Red Sea in preparation for a possible Hormuz mission.

McGuinty’s message was clear: Canada is coordinating with partners, the mission is taking shape, and Geneva could be the next decisive step for restoring freedom of navigation.
