Aurora, A Foundation Model for the Earth System

Paris Perdikaris, Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics, and collaborators at Microsoft Research have developed Aurora, a foundation AI model capable of forecasting a wide range of environmental phenomena, including tropical cyclones, ocean waves, air quality, and high-resolution weather, at a fraction of the cost of traditional systems.

Aurora outperforms existing models and offers a scalable, low-cost tool to help emergency responders better prepare for extreme weather events. The team's findings are published in Nature.

Clarification: When referring to Aurora’s performance on hurricanes in 2023, it refers to outperforming operational forecasting centers on average across all evaluated storms.
