A bad bishop, World Cup Quarterfinals, Elo:2732 and World no.20 | Durarbayli vs Vidit Gujrathi
One mistake is all it took for Vasif Durarbayli to land in a positionally difficult situation against Vidit Gujrathi at round five of the World Cup 2021. The light squared bishop dug its own grave on b1 and never could see the light of day!
It was a fine positional game that helped Vidit reach the Quarter Finals of the FIDE World Cup, World no.20 ranking and a live rating of 2732. With this Vidit became only the 2nd Indian ever (after Vishy Anand) to reach the quarter finals of a FIDE World Cup and he also now has qualified for FIDE Grand Prix series of events in 2022. A big win.
IM Sagar Shah analyzes this encounter and also tells you the points where Vasif Durarbayli could have fought back.
