Linux has a reputation for being harder to hit than some other platforms, but its malware history is very real. STAOG is widely described as the first known Linux virus, appearing in 1996 and infecting ELF executables. BLISS followed in 1997 and became one of the early Linux executable infectors documented by antivirus vendors, showing that Linux viruses were not just theory. Much later, SYMBIOTE showed how far Linux threats had evolved: instead of behaving like an old-school file infector, it operated as a stealthy parasitic shared library that could hide activity, harvest credentials, and provide covert access on infected machines.
