Show of the Week: 5 Sneaky Changes to Historic Paris in Assassin's Creed: Unity
Show of the Week says bonjour to Arno, the new assassin for a new era in a new open-world city. That city is Paris of the late 1700s, a place packed with graceful monuments and seething with popular unrest, which historical accuracy stickler Andy surveys for sneaky anachronisms.
Unity is the first Assassin's Creed to appear only on the new consoles and PC, and it puts the new hardware to work bringing to life a bigger, more beautiful historic urban playground than ever before.
Though the game's ambition is also its occasional undoing, when a super busy scene drags the framerate down, and we found the new co-op mode especially hampered by game systems struggling to keep up.
But the abundance of explorable interiors through which Arno can barge, totally uninvited, is a welcome novelty. Also welcome is the enhanced flexibility of your main assassination missions, in which you are encouraged to approach an important assassination in your own inimitable style.
Elsewhere, Unity is less revolutionary than its historical setting, and you'll soon settle into the familiar rhythm of clearing markers off the map by synchronising viewpoints, tailing targets and the like.
The story is also on the conservative side, but Arno is a swaggering noble assassin in the mould of the supremely likeable Ezio, which we'll take over the sombre worthiness of your Connor Kenway any day of the week.
