Positive Feedback vs Negative Feedback: How Leaders Perceive You
You need to know what executives say about you in private. Both positive feedback vs negative feedback. Visit https://joelinspirationalspeaker.com to deliver this motivational speech or corporate training for your employees: “The Power of Perception: Reputations Are Built on Perception.”
Most employees don’t really know how they are perceived. They don't know positive feedback vs negative feedback. The image they project or impression they make on others can actually be undermined by negative perceptions and they don’t even know it is happening.
Executives can be ruthless in critiquing employees, as they want to choose the right people for promotion. They have to be brutally honest. Your job is to figure out how to make sure they say only positive things even when they’re being brutally honest.
When executives discuss candidates for promotion or review their performance, they often gather around a table in a large group. Here’s how the discussion typically goes: Each person says one positive thing about the employee they’re discussing, followed by a huge caveat. For example, “Meg is super reliable and she really knows the ropes, but she just keeps to herself all the time. She’s not approachable.”
Paul, a client, witnessed this happening one time and vowed not to let it happen to himself or his direct reports again. He wanted to turn all the “buts” into “ands.” That meant first getting clarity on all the caveats that executives were voicing. Then he worked to eradicate each one of them by shifting that negative perception into a positive one. Three months later, at the review cycle, not one of his direct reports got a “but.” They only got “ands.” This shows how self-awareness can work wonders—and getting feedback is how you become self-aware.
Look for the “buts” that are getting in your way, so you can turn perceptions around. That means asking for both positive feedback and negative feedback from people who might intimidate you. Gather your courage and do it. Executives are often more supportive than you think—they want you to turn negative perceptions around. They just don’t usually seek out employees to offer that feedback, because they’re busy people. Asking your boss, or your boss’s boss, to share the negative as well as positive feedback that executives have voiced at their meeting is another way to get the information you need.
Then work to change the behaviors that are undermining their perception of your value and impact. If you have an advocate in that circle of execs, share your goals and ask for feedback. Next time, that person can help them see the changes you’ve made. This is how you evaluate positive feedback vs negative feedback.
