First, always be aware of your surroundings and what's going on around you. If you're in a less-than-great neighborhood, resist the temptation to use side and back doors. Use the front door and look at your entrance and walkway before you open the door. Always lock your doors and have at least one "pick-proof" deadlock on every outside door engaged at all times.
