Vandana Shiva: Food System Transformation and Reversing the Climate Crisis

On November 2nd, 2014, Dr. Vandana Shiva spoke at Contois Auditorium at Burlington City Hall in support of Vermont's first in the nation no-strings-attached GMO labeling law.

The law will require labels on genetically engineered foods sold at retail outlets in the state of Vermont starting in July of 2016. The bill was signed into law on May 8, 2014. Unlike labeling laws passed in Maine and Connecticut, Vermont’s law does not require other states to act first before products will be labeled.

The day the bill was signed into law, a consortium of corporate interests including the Grocery Manufacturers Association, the International Dairy Foods Association, and the Snack Food Association announced that they would sue the state to stop the law from going into effect.
