Tracing an image in Inkscape without a solid background

Usually a clipart image is easy to trace and break into a few colored layers, but sometimes the layers created just aren't what you want and it becomes a little more difficult. Here I show you a few little hiccups and how I go around them when tracing an image in Inkscape.
