During the assembly process of the Caterpillar 3412 engine, after thoroughly preparing the piston and connecting rod and properly lubricating all components, the piston is carefully inserted into the cylinder using a ring compressor tool. The orientation of the rings and connecting rod must precisely match the cylinder number. Once the piston is seated, the connecting rod is aligned with its corresponding crankshaft journal, and the lower bearing shell is placed in the rod cap for installation.

The connecting rod cap bolts are tightened in two stages. In the first stage (pre-torque), an initial torque of approximately 60 lb-ft is applied using a torque wrench to seat the bearing. In the second stage, an additional 120 degrees of rotation is applied using a torque angle gauge to achieve proper bolt stretch and secure clamping force. Finally, bearing clearance is checked using a Plastigage strip. The measured clearance must fall within the standard range of 0.071 to 0.168 mm. This step is critical to ensure proper oil film formation and to prevent wear, seizure, or damage to the engine during operation.
