We all love our pets, but have you given a thought for the vets that look after them in their time of need? The veterinary profession is in crisis – with dwindling numbers, an alarmingly high suicide rate and the costs of training far outweighing their expected salary, the services of veterinarians are needed more than ever.

Shalsee Vigeant details the trials of her profession, underpaid, overworked and neglected, and explains why we cannot afford to continue ignoring their plight. Shalsee offers a vision of the world where the talents of veterinarians are used to ensure a brighter future for animals and humans alike.

Shalsee is a veterinary doctor, director and practice owner with a career spanning over three decades. Shalsee has worked across the world specialising in trauma and emergency medicine and before coming to New Zealand, was the director of a large-scale emergency clinic in New Hampshire. She then went on to the role of Veterinary Manager at the SPCA in Auckland before gravitating back to emergency and critical care medicine. She is a frequent commentator in NZ media around topics in the veterinary profession but her passion lies with mentoring young professionals in the field and finding ways to make this career lifetime sustainable.
