My God Helen Smith on Scientology: Faith, Controversy, and Spiritual Fulfillment | S2E5

Scientology is probably most closely associated with Tom Cruise and fellow Hollywood heavy weights like John Travolta and Juliet Lewis. But while this relatively new religion counts many of the acting fraternity amoung its ranks it also attracts thousands of people with less high profile jobs.

This week on ‘My God’ Auckland GP Helen Smith talks to presenter Chris Nichol about her the role Scientology plays in her busy life, her discovery of the religion 20 years ago which saw her parents threaten to disinherit her, and the controversy that surrounds the faith.

Helen grew up in Perth in a fairly traditional Anglican environment. Her family were regular church goers, sang in the choir and took part in Church run community events. Helen says she enjoyed going to Church, in particular because of the sermons given by their parish priest. “We had a great priest who spoke about fundamentally good nature of man, how one can apply the teachings of Christ to everyday life to encourage that goodness – to become a better person.” She went to an Anglican school where again attention was paid to the spiritual aspect of life.

Becoming a doctor was something Helen set her sights on as a teenager –she worked hard and stayed focused to achieve her goal. She was named dux of her school and became the first person in her family to go to University. About this time Helen’s parents left the Anglican Church and she found, unlike her high school education, there was no place for spirituality at Med School. “There was no spiritual dimension to my education at Med School – it was all about the brain and body, and nothing to do with the idea of that we may have a spirit.” Helen says she felt there must be something more and began searching for answers to her questions about our spiritual nature and the purpose of this life. She says she was surprised to find what she was looking for not in the Anglican Church but rather, in Scientology. “The ideas, philosophy behind Scientology made a lot of sense to me.”

In a frank interview Helen discusses with Chris the central tenets of Scientology and the controversial figure who founded the religion, L Ron Hubbard. Helen also talks about why she believes the Church gets such bad press and her thoughts on past lives and the possible existence of other life in the Universe
