So you think we’re pretentious?

So you think because we listen to Beethoven,
Read Les Misérables,
Watch Cocteau’s Orpheus,
And reference Greek Mythology,
We’re pretentious?

Tell me,
Are you the same person who thinks girls who
Listen to BTS,
Read Twilight,
Watch Doctor Who
And reference Mean Girls
Are embarrassing and therefore make those pieces of art inherently ‘cringe’? Make it something that can’t even really be called art?

Because how could a piece of art be good if girls, who, in your opinion, clearly only live through and for the benefit of the eyes of the beholder, like it?

Because how could art, which has been around for decades and centuries and has already been approved by old men and upper class society, appeal to a simple high school girl?

We are not pretentious.

We are not pretending.

We are not exaggerating or thinking ourselves more important than others by consuming this art, or making unjustified claims to impress. The admiration of others doesn’t matter to us.

When will you understand?
Not everyone consumes and creates art solely for you. We don’t live to be watched!
Some people exist for themselves.

We don’t wish ourselves to Oxford or Cambridge to the Sorbonne or any of those weed covered institutions because we actually think that we’d be better people for it. Or because we think ourselves already above those surrounding us now.
We just want to go where we are understood. Where we can listen to a Mozart symphonie and have someone there to giggle about the moll-parallel to tonic twists. Where we can quote Shakespearan Nothing-jokes at each other. Where we can watch people in the streets and compare them to Tolstoi characters.
Where we can be the full extent of our interests with someone there to share them.

Because that’s what our air of pretentiousness really is: it’s just an interest in a certain kind of art - isn’t it?
It’s an interest in what seems to belong to old white, oftentimes racist, rich people - and it’s a form disrespect to their attempts to gate-keep.

Call us pretentious.

We won’t tone it down. We’re not pretending, we’re not trying to impress. And we’re not going to pretend we are not interested in the art we love just because you think it’s fake or cringe.

And if someone comes and tells us we’re pretentious for our passions, then lets turn to him and ask: To impress? But who? You? And laugh.
