Labour’s early-release scheme has freed over 26,000 prisoners in just seven months since launching in September 2024, following a sharp rise in the prison population. This policy includes the early release of hundreds of serious offenders who were originally sentenced to more than ten years in prison. Official figures from the Ministry of Justice indicate that over 26,450 inmates have been affected by this scheme, which allows certain prisoners to be released after serving 40% of their sentence, down from the previous 50% threshold.
