Australia's Climate Crisis: Why Fossil Gas is a Dead End

Australia is facing extreme weather events, from record heatwaves to devastating bushfires. The country's marine environment is suffering, with coral reefs bleaching and algal blooms causing havoc. This is a direct result of climate change, fueled by global warming.
The National Climate Risk Assessment report warns of severe impacts on health, social support, and natural systems if global warming reaches 2°C. Australians have a vested interest in global action to limit warming to the Paris Agreement's 1.5°C limit.
The solution lies in rapid decarbonization and transitioning to clean, renewable energy. Renewables are already taking over, and the economics favor a global energy transition. However, the fossil fuel industry, including gas, is a major barrier.
Australia's plans to sell liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Asian markets until 2070 are a concern. This locks in carbon emissions and prevents a transition to renewable energy. The alternative is cheaper, more effective, and better for the planet.
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is unreliable and costly, and it fails to achieve real zero emissions. The fossil fuel industry's reliance on government liability for storage is a significant issue.
Australia has the potential to lead the global energy transition with its abundant critical minerals, green hydrogen, and endless sun and wind. It's time to prioritize a clean energy future and take action against fossil fuels.
