সাইপ্রাসকে বলা হয় দেবী আফ্রোদিতির জন্মস্থান। এখানে মানব বসতির আদিভূমি হচ্ছে দক্ষিণ উপকূলীয় এলাকা ‘ইতোকরেমনস’। খ্রিষ্টজন্মের ১০ হাজার বছর আগে এখানে শিকারের মাধ্যমে জীবিকা নির্বাহকারীদের বসতি ছিল বলে প্রমাণ পাওয়া যায়। তারা খ্রিষ্টপূর্ব আট হাজার ২০০ বছর আগে স্থায়ীভাবে গ্রামীণ জীবনের আওতায় আসে। এখানে প্রথম সভ্য মানুষ আসে আনাতোলিয়া থেকে খ্রিষ্টপূর্ব ২ হাজার ৪০০ বছর আগে। আর গ্রিকরা আসে খ্রিষ্টপূর্ব এক হাজার ৬০০ বছর আগে। এর পর আশপাশের বিভিন্ন জায়গা থেকে বিভিন্ন সময় নানা জাতি ও বর্ণের লোক এখানে এসেছে। সাইপ্রাস ইতিহাসের বিভিন্ন সময় গ্রিক, রোমান, পারসীয় এবং মিসরীয় শাসকদের অধীনে শাসিত হয়। ৩৯৫ সালে এ দ্বীপটি বাইজানটাইন সাম্রাজ্যের অধীনে চলে যায়। আরবরা এটি দখল করে ৬৪৩ সালে। ১১৯১ সালে তৃতীয় ক্রুসেডের সময় এটি দখল করে ইংল্যান্ডের রাজা রিচার্ড। ১৫৩৯ সালে অটোমানরা এটি দখলে নেয়। ১৮৭৮ সালে দ্বীপটি ব্রিটেনের একটি সামরিক ঘাঁটিতে পরিণত হয়। ১৯২৫ সালে দ্বীপটিকে ব্রিটিশরা নিজেদের একটি কলোনি বলে দাবি করে। অবশেষে ১৯৬০ সালের ১৬ আগস্ট এক চুক্তির মাধ্যমে দেশটি স্বাধীনতা লাভ করে।
