China’s Medog Hydropower Station to Surpass Three Gorges Dam.

China is building what could become the largest hydropower project in the world. The Medog Hydropower Station in Tibet’s Mêdog County.

Planned on the Yarlung Tsangpo River, the project is expected to generate around 60,000 MW of power and produce nearly 300 billion kWh annually. When completed in 2033, it will surpass the Three Gorges Dam in capacity, making it the most powerful hydroelectric station on the planet.

With an investment of nearly ¥1 trillion (US$137 billion), the mega-project could transform China’s clean energy future. But it also raises big questions:
✅ What will this mean for the environment in Tibet?
✅ How might it affect neighboring countries like India and Bangladesh?
✅ Could this hydropower station reshape regional geopolitics?

This is one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects of the century, and its impact will be felt far beyond China’s borders.
