258 Kills in 81 Days | The Deadliest Tank Commander Ever

Lafayette G. Pool became one of the most feared tank commanders of World War II.

In the summer of 1944, during the advance through France, Pool and his crew operated an M4 Sherman tank called “In The Mood.”

In just 81 days of combat, they destroyed 258 German vehicles — an unmatched record for an American tanker.

He constantly led from the front, pushing through ambushes and enemy fire without stopping.

In September 1944, his tank was finally hit. Pool was severely wounded and lost a leg — but survived the war.

He died in 1991, remembered as one of the deadliest tank commanders in U.S. history.
