Summer 1976: UK's second hottest summer average temperature recorded

Weather chart animation covering the period June 1st 1976 to August 31st 1976

Temperatures of 32C (90F) were recorded for 15 consecutive days between 23rd June and 7th July.

The previous winter and summer were both drier than average so water levels were already low by the start of June. Things got so bad that a minister for drought - Denis Howell - was appointed. In total 139 drought orders were issued around the country.

During the last week of August thunderstorms developed and the heatwave started to break. The autumn that followed was exceptionally wet.

PS: Summer 1976 is one of my first weather memories. At the time I was 6 and I can remember being on holiday in Newquay, Cornwall. I think we had unbroken sunshine for most of the time apart from one day when the fog rolled in. BG.
