You absolutely can record a great drum sound with one mic, as long as you obey this big rule of drumming. We’ll talk about what this rule says, and we’ll audition three different types of microphone to see which sounds best for this drum track. We’re testing out a Shure SM57, SM81, and a Nady ribbon mic. We’ll also explore the sound of a fourth mic that many of us have at our disposal. The differences between dynamic, condenser, and ribbon microphones is pretty massive, but it’s cool to hear how these three mic types compliment each other frequency-wise. The truth is, you can make ONE MIC work. It can actually be a really helpful learning experience as well, since this forces you to really listen and make sure you’ve got your playing together. This is practical for several reasons, the biggest being that you need to sound good un-miked in a small room. Most gigs I play require careful mixing of the drumset so that I sound good without a sound man’s help. These are super important, practical skills to have, and they’re well worth talking about.
