The Nationalist Citizens Party (NCPI), a previously obscure regional outfit from Northeast India, has unexpectedly vaulted into the national spotlight following a massive rebellion within the Trinamool Congress (TMC). On Sunday, twenty rebel TMC Lok Sabha MPs met with Speaker Om Birla to announce their merger with the NCPI and pledge support to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Following the announcement, security forces were heavily deployed outside the NCPI office in Howrah on Monday, June 15, 2026.

Prior to this development, the NCPI was a registered unrecognized political party with no representation in Parliament or state assemblies. Its activities were largely restricted to Northeast states like Tripura—where it maintains a significant Bengali support base—and parts of Meghalaya, with very little publicly documented information regarding its founders or top leadership.

If this merger is formally recognized, the NCPI's parliamentary strength will jump from zero to twenty overnight. This rapid shift will make it the second-largest constituent within the NDA behind the BJP, overtaking the Telugu Desam Party's (TDP) sixteen seats. This mass defection deals a severe blow to Mamata Banerjee's TMC, triggering a major internal crisis and dramatically reshaping the opposition dynamics in the Lok Sabha.
