Bishop McDevitt girl kicked out of prom heads to William Penn prom

YORK, Pa. (WHTM) – The Bishop McDevitt girl kicked out of prom for wearing a suit made it to William Penn High School’s prom Saturday.

“Does my hair look good?” Aniya Wolf asked as she gets ready.

School officials argue she broke the dress code after showing up to prom wearing a suit. They kicked her out.

“This is Aniya. This is who Aniya has been since she’s very young. And she would not look right in a dress. She looks great in a suit,” Carolyn Wolf, Aniya’s mother, said.

York City School District invited her to their prom one day later.

“It was just amazing to know that many people cared,” Aniya said.

So did folks like Montell Williams, professional soccer player Ashlyn Harris, and the mayor of Philadelphia; sending her tweets of support.

“I love McDevitt. I love my school, I love the coaches, I love the teachers. They’re all great. They’ve never frowned upon me for the way I’ve dressed before in the past. But they did make me feel very discriminated against,” Aniya said.

But that feeling was left at the front door after receiving a big hero’s welcome.

“It was really cool. It was really thrilling to see her, and people are happy that she’s here,” Carolyn said.

Several days after Aniya was kicked out of her own prom, the school sent a note home with students saying that girls must wear dresses under their gowns at graduation.

Aniya is a junior this year but tells ABC27 she will have some tough decisions on whether or not she’ll stay at Bishop McDevitt next year.
