Smokey and the Bandit was released on May 19th, 1977, and grossed a total of $126 million, making it one of the highest-grossing films in America that year, second only to Star Wars. The film was directed by Hal Needham, who, up until that point in his career, had only worked as a stuntman. His stunt work was very impressive, and by the 1960s, he was the highest-paid stuntman in the field, working as a stunt double for actors like Burt Reynolds, Clint Walker, Clint Eastwood, and many others. He decided to break out of his comfort zone, however, and turned instead to directing.

Smokey and the Bandit became Hal Needham’s directorial debut, and it was a smashing success. After that, he collaborated frequently with Burt Reynolds on many other popular stunt films, including The Cannonball Run, Hooper, and Stroker Ace.

Smokey and the Bandit follows two friends, Bo “Bandit” Darville and Cledus “Snowman” Snow, played by Burt Reynolds and Jerry Reed respectively. The film follows the two as they attempt to transport 400 cases of beer illegally across the country, and hijinks ensue as law enforcement begins to track them down. This road action comedy film relies heavily on physical comedy, as well as many stunts (which were, of course, director Hal Needham’s specialty).

Despite the incredibly cheesy premise, audience members were drawn in by movie star Burt Reynolds, and stayed for the hilarious and action-packed film. The consensus among audience members and critics alike was unanimous- while the film may not carry any deep meaning, it’s great fun to watch, and well worth a couple of hours for plenty of car chases and hilarious dialogue. Overall, the film is regarded as a classic, rising above its countless sequels and ripoffs.

Even though the plot of Smokey and the Bandit may be simple and cheesy, the making of the film is filled with interesting surprises. In today’s video, we’re going to take a look at some of the crazy behind the scenes facts of Smokey and the Bandit that you definitely didn’t know.
