Ingredients:
• 2 and 1/4 tsp dry yeast
• 125ml/1/2 cup warm water
• 185ml/ 3/4 cup warm milk
• 125ml/ 1/2 cup melted butter plus 5 tbsp for brushing on the bread
• 60g/ 1/3 cup granulated sugar
• 1/4 tsp salt
• 3 egg yolks
• 540g/ 4 cups all-purpose flour
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• powder sugar for dusting the bread
Step 1
In a bowl, combine 1 tsp of sugar with the warm water and the yeast. Let the yeast activate for 5 minutes. Add the milk, the melted butter, the vanilla extract, the remaining sugar and the beaten egg yolks.
Step 2
Add the flour gradually while stirring the dough with a wooden spoon or spatula until it gathers in the center of the bowl. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and a kitchen towel and let the dough rise for about 2 hours until doubled in size.
Step 3
Deflate the dough and transfer it on a floured surface. Roll it into a rectangle and brush melted butter all over the dough. Using a knife, cut the long side of the dough into strips. Roll the strips into spirals. Arrange them on a baking pan, cover, and let them rise for 50 minutes at room temperature.
Step 4
Brush them with melted butter on top and bake them at 175ºC for 15 minutes. Remove them from the oven and let them cool a little bit on a cooling rack. Sprinkle icing sugar on top and serve!
