I think I’m correct in saying the ex Temptations singer’s storming redemption song was far more popular stateside as a new release than in the UK. Though released on Motown it’s a Philly production from Norman Harris featuring most of the MFSB regulars. The original is quite short and my aim was to produce one of those drawn out jams we sometimes heard on Philadelphia International albums were the band let loose and orchestration is brought to the four. Thankfully 40 years after release “Goin’ Up In Smoke”’s prediction that we are all going to burn in hell hasn’t come to fruition (yet). Ten City recorded a version in the 90s, which I’ve since realised is how many UK house heads know the song.
