Edwin H. Gott - Blasting Her New Dual Horns for Duluth

For Independence Day, I thought we'd take a look a giant of American steel, made at an American shipbuilder (Bay Shipbuilding at Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin), hauling iron ore pulled from an American mine... on it's way to being turned into more American steel.

Here is the 1004-foot Edwin H. Gott arriving in Duluth, Minnesota on the evening of June 21, 2020 to pick up iron ore from the CN dock... okay so not everything is American. Like her sister the Edgar B. Speer, the Gott isn't a frequent visitor to Duluth, usually loading in Two Harbors instead. But on this day we were treated to seeing both the Gott and the Speer pass through the shipping canal. She didn't immediately enter the canal when reaching Duluth, however. For some reason, she wasn't quite ready, so she sailed a circle out in the lake before finally entering the canal.

The previous two times I saw the Gott, she didn't salute, so I was really hoping for a salute this time. She didn't disappoint... indeed, she showed off her new dual horn arrangement which gives her a similar sound to the Roger Blough... another dual-horned ship in the Great Lakes Fleet.

After watching the Gott pass through the shipping canal, I relocated to Rice's Point and watched the Gott make the turn and pass under the John A. Blatnik highway bridge as she proceeded towards the CN dock. The sun would occasionally peak through the clouds, giving the Gott a nice glow in the evening light.
