The construction started at the request of Fatih Sultan Mehmet in 1460, was completed in 18 years. Topkapı Palace has hosted the administration of the Empire for 400 years out of 600 years, it is known that the population of Topkapı Palace exceeded 4,000 during these periods.

In the courtyard of the palace (first courtyard), surrounded by gardens and squares; There were Hagia Eirene Church (used as a warehouse and weapons depot), Mint, Hospital, Bakery, Hasırcılar Ocağı structures.

In the second courtyard; Justice Square, Divan-ı Hümayun Treasury, behind the building; The Tower of Justice, the Baltacılar Ward, the entrance to the Harem, and the Stables are located.

In the Enderun Courtyard (third courtyard), there is the Sultan's Supply Room, the Private Room, the Enderun Treasury, and the Palace School.

In the last courtyard (fourth courtyard), there are structures with classical pavilion architecture (Baghdad and Revan Kiosks), hanging gardens, and Iftariye Gazebo. The Mecidiye Mansion and the Dressing Room are the buildings in the last section.
