This was the last time that Thomas Cook Airlines UK operated its own Boeing 757 to the Canaries and also the 3rd from last scheduled flight operated by this aircraft under the registration, G-JMAA with Thomas Cook Airlines UK. Now registered as D-ABOP, its fate now lies in the hands of Thomas Cook UK's sister airline, Condor, where I'm sure that it will spend many more flying years.

I thoroughly enjoyed this flight down to Lanzarote, the fact that this flight only operated with 49 passengers out of a possible 280, most probably influenced this. There was tonnes of space to move about and spread out on this 3 and a half hour flight. I took advantage of this by moving around and checking out some of the views from other seats around the aircraft as it's unlikely that I will fly on another 757-300 again.
As usual. there were slot delays out of Gatwick, where we were initially told that we had a half an our wait before we could pushback and start rolling. Luckily this time was brought forward, and we were moving just 15/20 mins behind schedule. We departed on runway 26L, straight out towards Southampton, using the relatively newly introduced NOVMA1X SID. This is in-line with future movement towards RNAV navigation, removing the need for ground-based, conventional navigation equipment like VORs and NDBs. The aircraft was very light, less than 20% load, so it took off with maximum de-rate (minimum takeoff power) using little runway, and climbed faster than usual for a -300 series. We climbed straight up to 39,000ft and routed over the Bay Of Biscay, Northern Spain, Portugal, and the finally descended into the Canaries.
On this occasion we landed on Runway 21 at Arrecife which is quite uncommon. The approach takes you over the island of Lanzarote towards a VOR station at the airport before making a final adjustment to line up with the runway. This was a new one for me! Full reverse thrust was used and we vacated at the far end of the runway, before taxiing into a remote stand on the apron. It was one of the busier days for Arrecife, so lots of movements can be seen as we arrived.

I was glad to get on the 757-300 once more, possibly for the last time, but it is likely that Condor 757's will be brought over for the summer seasons here in the UK. It won't quite be the same as flying on the British registered aircraft, but maybe that's just me! :P
