The Rolex Daytona and the Omega Speedmater are two of the world’s most famous chronographs. The Speedmaster was launched in 1957 and is the flight-certified watch of NASA and the first watch worn on the moon. The Daytona arrived in 1963 and made global headlines in 2017, when Paul Newman’s very own Paul Newman Daytona sold for $17.8 million.

The biggest difference between the Rolex Daytona and the Omega Speedmaster is the variation that exists in each collection. There is only really one version of the Daytona - all of the current range will have a case diameter of 40mm and be powered by the Cal. 4130 movement.

On the other hand, the Omega Speedmaster collection is very diverse. The brand still produces a NASA-certified version with a hand-wound movement and Hesalite crystal but Omega also offers other Speedmater watches such as the Mark II, Racing, and X-33 models that are powered by a number of different movements.

As for dive watches, the two core models from Rolex and Omega are the Submariner and the Seamaster. The Rolex Submariner dates back to 1953, while the Omega Seamaster was first launched in 1957. In their current forms, both watches offer 300m of water resistance and unidirectional timing bezels with ceramic inserts.

The Omega Seamaster line is far more diverse than the Rolex Submariner. Metal and color options aside, all Rolex Submariner watches are 40mm in diameter and the only additional feature is a date. Omega Seamaster Diver watches cases can be found in a number of sizes and the brand also offers chronograph variations.

Both brands also offer more advanced dive watches in the form of the Sea-Dweller and Planet Ocean. While the Rolex Sea-Dweller first appeared in 1967, the Omega Planet Ocean didn’t join the catalog until 2005.

The current Rolex Sea-Dweller is 43mm and offers users 1,220 meters of water resistance. The standard depth rating of the Omega Planet Ocean is 600 meters, but the collection is more varied and it is available in a number of different case sizes, materials, configurations, and complications.

Both Rolex and Omega offer everyday watches. For Rolex, the Datejust is the brand’s go-to model. First released in 1945, the Rolex Datejust is now the brand’s most diverse collection; however all Rolex Datejust watches are time and date models with 100 meters of water resistance.

The Omega Aqua Terra is a sub-collection of the Seamaster range and is a true go-anywhere watch with 150m of water resistance and versatile styling. Like the Datejust, the Aqua Terra is available in a number of sizes, materials, and configurations. However Omega also produces models with a range of complications.

The Rolex Cellini and the Omega De Ville are the brand’s dress watches. Today, all models feature 39mm cases crafted from 18k gold; however the brand does offer time-only, time and date, dual time, and moonphase models.

The Omega De Ville line was part of the Seamater collection but became its own line of dress watches in 1967. Today, the Omega De Ville contains a wide variety of different models, crafted in everything from stainless steel to platinum, and fitted with a wide variety of movements and complications.

Both Omega and Rolex produce antimagnetic watches. The Rolex Milgauss, launched in 1956, offers 1,000 gauss of resistance via an internal shield that protects the movement. The Omega Railmaster was released in 1957 and originally also relied on an internal shield; however the watch now uses one of the Omega’s Master Co-Axial movements that are entirely anti-magnetic by nature up to 15,000 gauss.

This is not the full extent of Rolex and Omega’s catalogs. Both brands offer an incredibly diverse assortment of watches and not every model has a counterpart in the other’s catalog. However, all of Rolex and Omega watches rank among the finest timepieces in the world.
