Jenna Ortega Breaks Silence on ‘Scream’ Departure After Melissa Barrera Was Cut From Film.
The Scream franchise is iconic for so many reasons, and its recent installments reached a new generation thanks to Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera’s star power. The actors aren’t coming back for the next movie, and in her latest cover story for The Cut, Jenna revealed the real reason behind her departure from the film. ICYMI, she left after Melissa was cut from the project in November 2023.
“It had nothing to do with pay or scheduling. The Melissa stuff was happening, and it was all kind of falling apart,” the Death of a Unicorn actor said, referring to her co-star’s reported exit from the film. Per the BBC, the studio reportedly cut Melissa from the franchise’s upcoming movie after she shared social media posts supporting Palestine in the Israel-Gaza conflict.
Jenna continued, “If Scream VII wasn’t going to be with that team of directors and those people I fell in love with, then it didn’t seem like the right move for me in my career at the time.”
Once Melissa was removed from Scream VII, reports that Jenna had quit the film started surfacing. According to a November 2023 post from Deadline, it had “nothing to do” with Melissa’s firing, and sources said that Jenna left due to scheduling conflicts with Wednesday season 2, which was filmed in Romania.
Producers chimed in shortly after, saying that Melissa’s actions “crossed a line” into “hate speech” against Israel.
“Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech,” a Spyglass spokesperson told Variety at the time.
Nearly a year after she was dropped from the movie, Melissa told The Independent that it was the “darkest and hardest” time for her.
“It was quiet for like 10 months,” she said of her acting jobs. “I was still getting offers for small things here and there – I’m not going to lie and say there was nothing – but [the message] was, ‘Oh, she probably doesn’t have work, she’ll say yes to anything.’”
She added, “It was the darkest and hardest year of my life, and I had to reevaluate everything. There were times when I felt like my life was over.”
Hopefully, we’ll get to see Melissa and Jenna reunite in another project down the line.
