This video is about 2 major Astronomy Updates. N6946-BH1 was a supergiant star that disappeared in the galaxy NGC 6946. It was 25 times the mass of the Sun and was 20 million light years distant from Earth. N6946-BH1 was either a red supergiant or a yellow hypergiant. It attracted attention when it flared up in 2009, increasing its luminosity by a factor of ten, to one million times that of the Sun. It then dimmed over several years until it was five times dimmer than in its original state.

The new study, published on the arXiv, analyzes data gathered by JWST's NIRCam and MIRI instruments. It shows a bright infrared source that appears to be a remnant dust shell surrounding the position of the original star. This would be consistent with material ejected from the star as it brightened rapidly.

It could also be an infrared glow from material infalling into the black hole, though that seems less likely.

On July 19, 1952, Palomar Observatory was undertaking a photographic survey of the night sky. Part of the project was to take multiple images of the same region of the sky, to help identify things such as asteroids.

At around 8:52 that evening a photographic plate captured the light of three stars clustered together. At a magnitude of 15, they were reasonably bright in the image.

At 9:45 pm the same region of sky was captured again, but this time the three stars were nowhere to be seen. In less than an hour they had completely vanished.
