How do I know my baby is okay in the first trimester?
The best first guess is a positive pregnancy test.
I already know I’m pregnant.
If you miscarry, the hormone that indicates that you are pregnant stops doubling every two days and drops off. You’ll see that hormone drop off even before a miscarriage.
A miscarriage would be a sure sign that something was wrong.
If you did a pregnancy test this week and it is positive and the next week it is negative, you know it is a miscarriage.
I’d find out soon enough if that was the case. How else can I know the baby is okay early in the pregnancy?
I know the pregnancy calendars at this stage talk about yeah the kid has a liver and the finger nubs are forming.
I worry about it when they say nearly everything causes birth defects.
That’s one reason why women supposedly have morning sickness, to make them want to stay away from fish and red meat with the higher risk of getting food borne illness.
As if throwing up a couple times a day due to the morning sickness is better for me than super pooping for a day because I ate bad fish.
You’ll need to take care to keep hydrated with morning sickness that bad, just to keep yourself healthy.
I want to keep the kid healthy too.
Do not drink alcohol or use tobacco, do not do recreational drugs, stay away from all the old wives’ tales that tell you what gender you are having -
I know that if you pee on the chemicals in the toilet, you may get a color change and even chemical burns down there from the fumes created by the ammonia in your pee reacting with them.
You can do a lot to improve the odds that the kid is healthy by eating a healthy diet.
The irony is that the spinach and other healthy foods are as repulsive to me as what triggers the morning sickness.
So eat smaller meals to reduce the odds of throwing up, take your vitamins but not too much, make sure you get enough folate from enriched bread -
That’s all a given. How else do I know the kid is all right?
Go in to the doctor for your monthly checkups. They do a sonogram at least twice in the pregnancy.
That does not feel like enough.
They take measurements and often blood work to check on both of you.
It does not feel like enough.
So wait another two or three months, and you’ll be able to feel that the kid is okay every time it plays soccer with your kidneys or head butts you in the lungs.
